Cartier × La Verrerie de Biot : colour, light and the art of the French Riviera

In Saint-Tropez, for a series of lunches and dinners created for its clients, Cartier brought its world together with the spirit of the French Riviera — a land of light, colour and creativity, where art and the art of living have intertwined for decades.

The Glass of La Verrerie de Biot

It is in this encounter between color, light, and material that the craftsmanship of La Verrerie de Biot naturally finds its place alongside Cartier.

Our signature bubble glass, created in Biot since 1956, plays with light in a unique way. The bubbles captured within the glass, its transparency, and subtle variations in colour create ever-changing reflections.

Like a precious stone, glass never reveals exactly the same color depending on the light that passes through it.

For this collaboration, the creations of La Verrerie de Biot thus contribute to a scenography conceived as a true living tableau: alongside ceramic plates crafted by Agnès Sandahl, a composition where glass and ceramic, colors, materials, and light echo each other.

Between the world of Cartier, the references to Rothko and Mondrian, the spirit of Godard and Pierrot le Fou, and the iconic light of Saint-Tropez, this encounter ultimately celebrates a shared language: that of creation and color.

"La Verrerie de Biot × Cartier — a meeting of two crafts, brought together by light, material, and color."

When light transforms matter

A precious stone is not simply green, red, or blue.

The emerald, for example, is not limited to a single green: it reveals an infinity of variations depending on the light that touches it, the reflections it casts, and the colors that surround it.

This idea echoes the work of Pierre Soulages and his Outre-Noir: a black that, under the effect of light, becomes multifaceted, revealing nuances and reflections that were not apparent at first glance.

Glass, too, has this ability to transform.

Cartier, colour as a signature

Cartier has long maintained a privileged relationship with art and artists. Long before patronage became common practice in the sector, the House committed itself to creativity and numerous artistic figures, notably Jean Cocteau, with whom it shares historic ties.

This relationship with art is also reflected in the work with color.

Cartier is particularly famous for its signature pairing "Tutti Frutti", where emeralds, rubies and sapphires come together in vibrant, distinctive and powerful compositions.

An approach to color that resonates particularly well with the Côte d’Azur. Because here, color is never static. It evolves with the light, transforms throughout the day, and constantly reveals new nuances.

Saint-Tropez, a land of color

Provence and the French Riviera are about more than just the glamour of Cannes, its red carpet steps, and its international elegance. They are also a preserved and authentic land, deeply shaped by the artists who lived, created, and found their inspiration here.

From Nietzsche to Matisse, from Picasso to Van Gogh, from Cézanne to Cocteau, and including Jean Marais, Le Corbusier, Brigitte Bardot, Alain Delon, and Jean-Claude Brialy, many have been drawn to that special light.

“On the French Riviera, light transforms landscapes, reveals materials, and intensifies colors. This light has inspired an entire artistic history and naturally finds its place in the world of Cartier.”
